Biography

Born in a family with long tradition of learning and scholarship, Dr Shrianth S Hasurkar got his education in ancient Sanskrit at the feet of his illustrious father Pandit Ratna Shripad Shastri Hasurkar, a renowned Shastri, Principal of Sanskrit College Indore and Relgious Teacher to HH Prince Yeshwantrao Holkar of Holkar Dynasty Indore State. Having born in a transition era, when ancient styles coexisted with modern education he was fortunate to have learnt Sanskrit in both traditional as well as modern style. He passed with distinction various examinations – Kavya, Vyakaran, Tark, Maya conducted by traditional Schools. At the same time studying in Sanskrit College he obtained degrees of MA in Sanskrit, Sahityacharya and entered into research field under guidance of Prof P L Vaidya of BHU in 1950-51. His research thesis was Advaita Vedanta – Contribution of Vachaspati Mishra to the doctrine of Maya. This work was adjudged as worthy of publication by Mithila Institute of Oriental Research Darbhanga.

He joined MP Collegiate Education service in 1952 and served with distinction till his retirement in 1982. Highlights of his career were setting up Shri Dudhadhari Vaishnava Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya Raipur in 1955-57 under guidance of Pt Ravishakar Shukla which also had a special museum for housing manuscripts of ancient Sanskrit texts. Later he served in different PG Colleges as Principal. He was known for his strict discipline and courage in managing the affairs of college as administrator particularly in the testing times (1970-1980), an era of student unrest in the country. But the iron rod was tempered with caring attitude which was reciprocated with love and respect by his students. He also holds the record of having longest tenure as Principal in the Collegiate Education Service of MP State.

Shrinath had inherited gift for creative writing from his father who himself had brought out 7 Books including much acclaimed “Mokshamandirasya Dwadashdarshan Sopanawali” a treatise on 12 streams of Vedic Philosophy.

Although he had been a prolific writer in his early years ( 15 research papers on Sanskrit Darshan in English language and an anthology of some 1100 odd Sanskrit verses called “Pushpanjali”) his creative urges were subsumed by the onerous demands of Administrative responsibilities (as Principal). Soon after his retirement in 1982, his latent creative spirit was freed and in short span of 5 years he wrote 5 Sanskrit Upanyasa. All his Sanskrit novels were hailed for their evocative charm, character portrayal and structural design written in a novel format (a somewhat recent Sanskrit literary tradition ) of which he can be justifiable considered a pioneer.( The ancient Sanskrit works are either in the form of Kavya ,Natya or treatise of Darshan). His forte was novels based on historical characters of India. His works were honoured by peers in the form of 3 major Awards in his life time itself.

A sensitive soul, his long innings as administrator ( Principal ) in turbulent times had finally taken toll of his health. Dr Shrinath passed away at relatively young age of 64 with many ideas for more novels to come, dying unborn with him. He had declared his intention to write a novel on Mahatma Gandhi in the Saraswat Sanman Award function to be titled “Vrati” which unfortunately could not be realised.
